When visiting a seaside town, there’s nothing I enjoy more than waking up early and walking barefoot on the beach.
For me, sinking the feet into the sand while hearing the waves crashing on the shore is almost as great for thinking about life as swimming.
That’s why I asked the locals at what time would the sun rise in Recife, a city situated in the state of Pernambuco, Brasil. They told me the estimated time and got surprised of my intentions behind asking it. Of course they thought me crazy.
Next day, as I was staying alone at a stylish room located on the 16th floor of a hotel right in front of one of the most beautiful beaches in the city, Praia de Boa Viagem, I woke up around 5 am to check in the sunrise only to find the sky still a bit dark, as shows the photo above.
Nonetheless, the stunning scenery just in front of me left me speechless: the grandiosity of the sea, at the same time so quite and so loud, almost tore me apart.
I couldn’t help staring at it. I dared not even to move a single muscle. I just stood there watching the waves falling endlessly one into another, listening to their whisper for uncountable minutes, feeling the wind that clearly had decided to get me down.
All this made me feel terribly small: ’What are we compared to this?’, I thought. ‘We are nothing! We’re nothing but insignificant beings wandering across this world.’
It took a while for me to take the meaning of it, but I managed to come around, and set alarm for 6 am.
The second scenery (below) was not as as powerful as the first, but it has certainly given me food for thought. Still, I stood up to it only a few minutes before going back to sleep.
One thing remains clear: My sould had been cleansed.
I woke up in time to walk barefoot on the beach.
